AIMIM fails to win any seat in Ahmedabad civic polls

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) faced a total washout in the 2026 Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections, failing to win a single seat. This is a sharp decline from the 2021 polls, where the party made a strong debut with seven councillors: three from Maktampura and four from Jamalpur.

Despite fielding 36 candidates across more than 10 Muslim-dominated wards this time, the party was completely rejected by the voters, with many of its candidates even losing their security deposits in wards like Shahpur, Khadia, and Behrampura.

The party's struggle was evident even before the first vote was cast. Two sitting corporators from Jamalpur resigned before the election, with one of them, Mustaq Khadiwala, defecting to the Congress and successfully retaining his seat. Internal friction also meant the party could not even field a full four-candidate panel in key areas like Shahpur and Khadia. In Danilimda, the party was left with no presence at all after its two candidates withdrew from the race.

Even a high-profile campaign by party chief Asaduddin Owaisi failed to turn the tide as all four AIMIM candidates in the Jamalpur ward lost their bids. The only silver lining for the party was in Gomtipur, where its candidates finished in second place with a decent vote share. However, the Congress ultimately swept that ward, leaving AIMIM with zero representation in the new municipal house.
