The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections have delivered a verdict filled with unexpected twists and dramatic turns, defying many exit poll predictions and setting the stage for another NDA government in the state.
NDA Crosses Majority Mark with Surprising Performances
As vote counting continues, the National Democratic Alliance has surged past the crucial 200-seat mark in the 243-member assembly, repeating its 2010 performance. The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single-largest party, maintaining a lead on 92 seats, while its ally Janata Dal (United) under Nitish Kumar's leadership is not far behind with leads on 81 seats.
This outcome represents a significant political victory for Nitish Kumar, who has governed Bihar for nearly two decades and is celebrated as "Sushashan Babu" for his governance. For the 74-year-old leader, this election was a crucial test of both political endurance and public trust amid questions about his changing political alliances.
Chirag Paswan's Stellar Performance Steals the Show
The biggest surprise of the 2025 Bihar elections has been Chirag Paswan, the self-declared "Hanuman" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His party, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), has delivered an extraordinary performance, currently leading on 20 out of the 29 seats it contested.
This represents a massive improvement from the party's previous performances, where it won just one seat in 2020 and two seats in 2015. The LJP's strong showing has contributed significantly to the NDA's comfortable majority, helping the alliance cross the "200 paar" threshold.
Opposition Fails to Make Expected Impact
On the other side of the political spectrum, the Rashtriya Janata Dal led by Tejashwi Yadav has failed to weave its magic with Bihar voters. The party, which many exit polls predicted would become the single-largest, has managed to secure leads on just 25 seats. Its ally Congress is leading on only three seats, indicating a substantial setback for the opposition alliance.
According to the latest Election Commission trends, other significant performances include:
- All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leading in 6 constituencies
- Congress and HAM(S) leading in 5 seats each
- Rashtriya Lok Morcha leading in 4 constituencies
- Left parties showing limited presence with CPI(ML)(L) leading on 2 seats and CPI(M) on 1
- BSP holding a single lead
The final results will be declared once the Election Commission completes the counting process, but current trends strongly indicate another term for the NDA government in Bihar, with Nitish Kumar likely to continue as chief minister and the BJP consolidating its position as the dominant force in the state politics.
