Chandigarh: Nishant Kumar Yadav, the deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer (DEO) of Chandigarh, conducted a video conference on Tuesday to assess the progress of the enumeration phase under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The review focused on the ground-level achievements since the enumeration drive commenced on June 15, 2026.
Structure of the Revision Drive
For the revision process, Chandigarh has been segmented into 10 blocks. Each block is supervised by an assistant electoral registration officer (AERO) and supported by 614 booth level officers (BLOs) operating at the field level. This structured approach aims to ensure comprehensive coverage across the city.
Progress in Enumeration
Officials informed the DC that within the first two days of the drive, enumeration forms had been distributed to approximately 1,10,000 electors out of the total 5,16,427 electors in the city. This rapid distribution highlights the efficiency of the field staff.
In a notable achievement, eight BLOs completed the distribution of forms across their respective booth areas in just two days, as reported by a UT spokesperson. Their swift action sets a benchmark for the remaining officers.
DC's Directives and Recognition
Yadav emphasized the significance of the Special Intensive Revision, stating that accurate and updated electoral rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections. He directed all AEROs and BLOs to ensure that no eligible voter is left out and that the entire exercise is carried out meticulously as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India.
Appreciating the swift work of the field staff, the DC announced that the eight BLOs who completed their distribution targets would be honoured with appreciation certificates. This recognition aims to motivate all BLOs to maintain high levels of efficiency and dedication.
Next Steps
The remaining BLOs have been instructed to accelerate the process and complete the distribution at the earliest. The enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision is scheduled to continue until July 14, 2026, with officials emphasizing the need for 100% coverage within the given timeline.
