Chennai Election Squads Seize Crores in Gold and Silver in Two Major Busts
In a significant crackdown, election flying squad officials in Chennai have seized gold and silver ornaments valued at several crores of rupees in two distinct incidents across the city. First Incident: Thousand Lights Constituency Seizure
On Thursday night, officers conducted a routine vehicle check on Narasimman Street within the Thousand Lights constituency. During this inspection, they discovered a substantial consignment of gold and silver ornaments hidden inside a car. The occupants of the vehicle were unable to provide any valid documentation or proof of ownership for the valuable items.
As a result, the entire consignment was immediately seized by the authorities. Preliminary investigations revealed that the jewellery had been transported from Mumbai via a flight and was intended for delivery to a jewellery outlet located in Chennai. The seized items were subsequently handed over to officials from the Income Tax Department at their Nungambakkam office for further scrutiny and legal action.
Second Incident: Chennai-Tirupati Highway Interception
In a separate but equally significant operation, election flying squad officials intercepted another vehicle near Lakshmapuram along the Chennai-Tirupati national highway. During this stop, they uncovered a large cache of gold jewellery and silver articles, also estimated to be worth several crores of rupees.
The individuals inside the vehicle claimed that the valuables were being transported to various shops in Tirupati. However, similar to the first incident, they failed to produce any supporting documents or legitimate paperwork to verify the origin or intended use of the consignment.
Consequently, the entire shipment was confiscated on the spot. The seized gold and silver items were then formally handed over to the treasury department for safekeeping and further investigation, as per standard protocol in such cases.
