Punjab Polls: Congress Defies AAP Wave, Wins 5 of 10 Zila Parishad Seats in Ropar
Congress Wins 5 Zila Parishad Seats in Ropar, Defies AAP

In a significant twist to the recent local body elections in Punjab, the Congress party has managed to carve out a stronghold in Ropar district, even as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) maintained a lead across the state. The results reveal a complex political landscape where national trends can diverge sharply at the district and block levels.

Ropar District Results: A Congress Stronghold Emerges

While AAP celebrated a statewide victory in the zila parishad and panchayat samiti polls, the Congress put up a formidable fight in Ropar. The party secured five of the total 10 zila parishad seats in the district. AAP won the remaining five. The contest for panchayat samiti seats was even more intense, with Congress capturing 50 of the 93 seats. AAP followed with 37 seats, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) claimed four and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won two.

The Congress's performance was marked by stunning clean sweeps in key blocks. In the Chamkaur Sahib block, the party won all 15 panchayat samiti zones. It repeated this feat in Morinda, securing all 16 panchayat samiti zones and three zila parishad seats. The political narrative shifted in the Ropar block, where AAP led with seven panchayat samiti seats against Congress's six and SAD's two. In Nangal, AAP secured 10 zones, while Congress won five.

Allegations and Political Backlash

The election campaign was not without controversy. Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi levied serious allegations against the ruling AAP. He claimed that AAP printed 100 extra fake ballot papers per polling booth, pre-marked in the party's favour, to be stamped by booth-level officers and stuffed into ballot boxes. Channi described this as part of widespread rigging, which included tearing opposition nominations and intimidating candidates, particularly in the Morinda area.

AAP dismissed all charges as baseless. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann countered by stating that such allegations were merely an admission of Congress's impending defeat. The political temperature in the district remains high, especially considering the assembly segment breakdown. The Chamkaur Sahib segment is represented by AAP's Dr. Charanjit Singh, who defeated Congress's Charanjit Singh Channi in the 2022 assembly polls. The other two segments, Ropar and Anandpur Sahib, are also held by AAP MLAs Dinesh Chadha and Minister Harjot Bains, respectively.

Analysis and Implications for Punjab Politics

The results from Ropar district's six blocks—Ropar, Nurpur Bedi, Chamkaur Sahib, Morinda, Anandpur Sahib, and Nangal—send a clear message. Congress leaders have described their sweep in certain blocks as a direct rejection of AAP's governance at the grassroots level. This localised success provides a crucial morale boost for the Congress, which has been grappling with electoral setbacks in the state.

The outcome also highlights the persistent challenges for AAP, which, despite its statewide mandate, faces pockets of strong opposition resistance. The performance of SAD and BJP, though limited in seats, indicates the continuing multi-cornered nature of Punjab's politics. For voters, these local elections are often a more immediate referendum on development and hyper-local issues than state or national polls.

As both major parties analyse the verdict, the focus will now shift to governance and delivery of promises. The results from Ropar prove that in Punjab's vibrant democracy, political waves are rarely uniform, and local factors continue to play a decisive role in shaping electoral fortunes.
