In a major breakthrough ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, police recovered 100 crude bombs from the house of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker in the Bhangar area of South 24 Parganas district. The accused, identified as Sheikh Sirajul, was taken into custody late on Saturday night.

Recovery of Explosives

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the local police and the Bomb Disposal Squad raided the residence of Sheikh Sirajul in the Bhangar police station area. During the search, they recovered 100 crude bombs, along with materials used for making such explosives. The bombs were later defused by the bomb squad.

Political Implications

The recovery has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the state, especially with the elections just a month away. The TMC has denied any involvement, stating that the party does not condone violence. However, the opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, have demanded a thorough investigation and accused the TMC of trying to intimidate voters.

Police Action

Police have registered a case under the Explosives Act and are interrogating the accused to ascertain the source of the bombs and whether they were intended to be used during the election campaign. Additional forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

This incident comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, where the ruling TMC is facing a tough challenge from the BJP and the Left-Congress alliance. The Election Commission has been urged to ensure free and fair elections.
