A tragic incident unfolded in Salem West constituency where a DMK worker, Mariyappan, died while performing election duties at a polling station on Thursday evening. The following morning, his mother Palaniammal succumbed to the shock of losing her son.
Details of the Incident
Mariyappan, a resident of Athikattanoor near Tharamangalam, was serving at the Athikattanoor polling station when he suffered a suspected heart attack. His cousin K Thangavelu confirmed the events to the Times of India, stating that Mariyappan collapsed during duty and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Mother's Demise
Palaniammal, who was reportedly in good health, could not bear the sudden loss of her son. She passed away on Friday morning, just hours after learning of his death. The dual tragedy has left the family and the local community in deep mourning.
Party Response
Salem Central district DMK secretary and tourism minister R Rajendran visited the bereaved family to pay his respects. He announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to Mariyappan's wife, Radha, on behalf of the DMK party. Several party functionaries, including Tharamangalam East union secretary Krishnamoorthy, accompanied the minister as a large number of party cadres gathered to honor the deceased.
