The Election Commission of India has issued a fresh directive to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Agarwal, explicitly prohibiting the deployment of civic volunteers and Green Police personnel for any election-related duties. This order, communicated in a letter on Wednesday, reinforces previous instructions aimed at ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
Strict Uniform Restrictions Imposed
In addition to the ban on deployment, the Election Commission has mandated that these personnel must not wear their official uniforms for a specified period surrounding the polls. Specifically, they are barred from donning their uniforms for three days prior to the election day and for one full day after the conclusion of the voting process. This measure is designed to prevent any potential confusion or misrepresentation that could arise from their presence in uniform during sensitive electoral phases.
Background of BJP Allegations
The directive follows a memorandum submitted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the CEO last year. The BJP had raised serious concerns, alleging that civic volunteers were being misused by the ruling party in West Bengal to manipulate the polling process. These allegations included claims of undue influence and partisan activities, prompting calls for a complete ban on their involvement in election duties to safeguard democratic fairness.
Ensuring Electoral Integrity
By reiterating this prohibition, the Election Commission aims to uphold the principles of free and fair elections. The move is part of broader efforts to eliminate any elements that could compromise the neutrality and transparency of the electoral machinery in West Bengal. Officials have emphasized that only authorized personnel, as per standard election protocols, should be engaged in poll-related activities to maintain public trust.
The implementation of these rules will be closely monitored by election authorities to ensure compliance across all districts. This action underscores the Commission's commitment to addressing political grievances and reinforcing electoral safeguards ahead of upcoming polls in the region.
