External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in Suriname on Wednesday on his maiden visit to the South American nation, aiming to bolster bilateral ties and discuss key issues with his Surinamese counterpart, Melvin Bouva.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
During his two-day visit, Jaishankar is scheduled to hold comprehensive talks with Bouva, focusing on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, and capacity building. The visit underscores India's commitment to deepening engagements with the Caribbean and Latin American regions.
Key Agenda Items
The discussions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including the expansion of economic partnerships, cultural exchanges, and collaboration in multilateral forums. India has been actively engaging with the Surinamese diaspora, which constitutes a significant portion of the population.
Jaishankar will also meet with other senior Surinamese officials and address the Indian community in Paramaribo. The visit is part of India's broader strategy to enhance its presence in the region and strengthen ties with countries that have historical and cultural links with India.
Suriname, located on the northeastern coast of South America, is home to a large Indian-origin community, making the relationship particularly significant. The visit is expected to result in several agreements aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation.
