A student was caught red-handed for malpractice during the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination in Hyderabad on Sunday. The accused allegedly conspired to cheat and was found inside the washroom actively searching for answers on his mobile phone, according to officials.
Incident Details
The incident occurred at a test center in the city, where the student was appearing for the re-exam. Examination invigilators became suspicious when the student spent an unusually long time in the washroom. Upon checking, they discovered him using his smartphone to browse for answers. The device was seized, and the student was handed over to local police for further investigation.
According to a PTI report, the student had allegedly planned the cheating in advance. The re-exam was being conducted for candidates who had faced technical glitches or other issues during the main NEET-UG 2026 exam held earlier this month.
Police Investigation Underway
Hyderabad police have registered a case against the student under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Telangana State Examination Malpractice Act. Authorities are also probing whether any external individuals or organized cheating syndicates were involved. Officials stated that the mobile phone would be sent for forensic analysis to trace any accomplices.
"We are investigating the matter thoroughly and will take strict action against all those found guilty," a senior police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Broader Context of Exam Malpractice
The NEET-UG 2026 re-exam was ordered by the Supreme Court after reports of irregularities in the main exam, including paper leaks and cheating incidents. The National Testing Agency (NTA) had deployed additional security measures, including CCTV surveillance and jammers, at test centers. Despite these efforts, this case highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining exam integrity.
In recent years, several high-profile cheating cases have emerged in India, prompting calls for stricter laws and technology-based monitoring. The NTA has not yet commented on the latest incident.
Impact on Candidates
The re-exam was held for approximately 1,500 candidates across multiple centers in Hyderabad. Many students expressed frustration over the delays caused by the re-exam. "We have been through a lot of stress because of these issues. It's unfair that a few cheaters spoil it for everyone," said a candidate who appeared for the re-exam.
Authorities have assured that the results of the re-exam will be declared on time, and no further disruptions are expected. The accused student faces disqualification from the exam and possible legal consequences.
