EC Cancels TMC Candidate's Nomination in Nadia Over Conflict of Interest
In a significant development in the 2026 Bengal assembly elections, the Election Commission has cancelled the nomination of Trinamool Congress candidate Abhinav Bhattacharya from Krishnanagar North in Nadia district. This marks the first such rejection involving a recognised political party's candidate in these elections, as reported by Ashis Poddar.
Grounds for Rejection: Section 9A of Representation of the People Act
The poll panel invoked section 9A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which disqualifies any individual who has a subsisting contract with the government for the supply of goods or execution of works. According to sources, the EC found that Bhattacharya's business dealings with the state government constituted a clear conflict of interest, thereby rendering his candidature invalid under the law.
TMC's Prepared Response and Alternative Candidate
Anticipating this possibility, the Trinamool Congress had already arranged for an alternative candidate, Somnath Dutta, to file his nomination papers. With Bhattacharya's nomination now officially cancelled, Dutta will contest from the Krishnanagar North seat as the TMC nominee, ensuring the party's presence in the electoral race remains uninterrupted.
Candidate's Reaction and Party Compliance
Abhinav Bhattacharya described the development as "unfortunate" but stated that he would abide by the party's decision. This move by the Election Commission underscores its commitment to enforcing electoral laws and maintaining transparency in the democratic process, particularly in high-stakes assembly elections like those in Bengal.
The cancellation highlights the ongoing scrutiny of candidates' backgrounds and potential conflicts, setting a precedent for future electoral contests in the region and beyond.
