Election Commission Deploys Motorcycles for Enhanced Polling Security in Kolkata
In a strategic move to ensure rapid response capabilities on polling day, the Election Commission (EC) has officially decided to hire motorcycles for police and central police personnel. This initiative is specifically designed to enable security forces to swiftly navigate the narrow lanes and remote areas of Kolkata during elections, where traditional four-wheeled vehicles often face accessibility challenges.
Motorcycles to Revolutionize Booth Access
A senior EC official emphasized on Monday that riding on motorcycles will allow security personnel to reach booths located in narrow lanes and isolated pockets that are otherwise inaccessible to larger vehicles. While motorcycles have been used selectively in previous elections, this marks the first time the system will be implemented comprehensively across all districts in the region, ensuring uniform security coverage.
Operational Autonomy for Central Forces
In addition to the motorcycle deployment, the EC has granted increased operational autonomy to central forces. According to the official, CAPF commandants will be deployed alongside central forces in designated areas, with troops acting under their direct instructions. State police will assist but not control these operations, and in sensitive situations requiring strict action, decisions will be made jointly by police and commandants.
Preparatory Meetings and Implementation
A few days prior to this announcement, the EC held a crucial meeting with Kolkata Police and Howrah Police, directing them to arrange an adequate number of motorcycles. This proactive step underscores the commission's commitment to enhancing electoral security and efficiency. The move is expected to significantly reduce response times and improve the overall safety and smooth conduct of polling processes in urban and rural settings alike.
