The Election Commission has announced a four-day extension for voter registration and objections. The new deadline is now January 19, 2026. This decision affects several states and union territories.
Extended Deadline for Voter Applications
Originally set for January 15, the deadline for submitting claims and objections has been pushed back. Voters can now file applications until January 19. This extension applies to forms for new voter enrollment and name deletions.
States and Union Territories Benefiting
The extension covers West Bengal, Goa, Rajasthan, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. The Election Commission granted this additional time after considering requests from state officials.
Manoj Agarwal, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, formally requested the extension. He cited the need for greater convenience for citizens. The Commission reviewed his appeal along with other relevant factors.
Official Communication from the Commission
In a letter to five Chief Electoral Officers, the Election Commission confirmed the decision. The letter referenced an earlier communication dated October 27, 2025. It stated that the Commission decided to extend the deadline based on the requests received.
Current Application Statistics
West Bengal has seen significant activity in voter registration. About 4.3 lakh applications for new voter enrollment were submitted by January 15. This followed the publication of the draft Special Intensive Revision list on December 16.
The Commission also received nearly 39,000 applications for deleting ineligible voters. These applications were submitted using Form 7.
Political Party Submissions
Political parties submitted a very low number of applications for voter inclusion. Only 8 applications were received from parties by January 15.
The Trinamool Congress filed the highest number at 3 applications. The CPM submitted 2 applications. The BJP, BSP, and the All India Forward Bloc each filed 1 application.
This extension provides extra time for citizens to ensure their voter registration is accurate. It also allows for corrections before the final electoral roll is prepared.
