Election Commission Updates Kerala Assembly Poll Turnout Figures

The Election Commission of India (EC) on Monday officially revised the voter turnout figure for the recent Kerala assembly elections to 79.63%. Chief Electoral Officer for Kerala, Rathan U Kelkar, clarified that this comprehensive percentage combines votes recorded through electronic voting machines (EVMs), postal ballots, and home voting procedures.

Breakdown of Voting Methods and Pending Count

According to the detailed data released by the commission, polling conducted through EVMs accounted for 78.27% of the total turnout. Postal ballots contributed an additional 1.36%, bringing the combined provisional figure to 79.63%. However, a significant number of 53,984 service voters remain to be accounted for in the final tally.

Kelkar emphasized that the complete and final consolidated polling figures will only be available after the counting process concludes and all service votes are properly included. The commission has already shared the current data with all recognized political parties contesting in the elections.

Addressing Opposition Concerns About Transparency

The announcement comes as a direct response to a formal letter sent by opposition leader V D Satheesan to the Election Commission. In his communication, Satheesan expressed serious concerns about the delay in publishing official polling data, noting that even three days after polling concluded, detailed and authenticated information—including constituency-wise turnout statistics and postal ballot figures—were not accessible on the official election website.

Satheesan stressed that the timely publication of such critical data is essential to ensure electoral transparency, enable thorough public scrutiny, and maintain trust in the democratic process. He argued that voters and political parties deserve immediate access to verified polling information.

Official Explanation for Data Delay

Responding to these concerns, Chief Electoral Officer Kelkar explained that the delay in releasing the complete data was primarily due to the time required to accurately compile postal ballot figures from across the state. He described this as a routine procedural delay limited to approximately three days, which is standard in election operations.

"There is no need for any confusion. The entire process is transparent. All political parties have access to booth-level data, and postal ballots were handled strictly in the presence of authorized party representatives," Kelkar stated firmly. He reassured stakeholders that every stage of the vote compilation process involved active participation from political party observers.

Enhanced Transparency Measures Implemented

To further bolster transparency and address any lingering concerns, Kelkar announced that webcasting facilities from strong rooms would be made available to all political parties. This measure allows continuous monitoring of vote storage and handling procedures.

Regarding complaints from some polling personnel who reportedly faced difficulties casting their votes, Kelkar clarified that the Election Commission has not denied voting rights to anyone. He advised that individuals with genuine grievances could seek legal remedies by submitting formal complaints to their respective returning officers.

The Chief Electoral Officer also noted that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise conducted before the elections yielded positive results in updating and verifying the electoral rolls.

Detailed Category-Wise Voting Statistics

The released data provides fascinating insights into voting patterns across different demographic categories:
