Election Commission Demands Report on BJP Candidate's Inflammatory Rally Speech in Kerala
The Election Commission of India has formally requested a detailed report from the Thiruvananthapuram district administration concerning the highly controversial speech delivered by Bharatiya Janata Party leader P K Krishnadas during an election rally in Kattakkada. Krishnadas, who is the National Democratic Alliance's candidate from the constituency, made a series of incendiary allegations that have sparked widespread condemnation and legal scrutiny.
Contentious Allegations Linking Fronts to Extremist Groups
At a rally inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Krishnadas asserted that both the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front were collaborating with the Social Democratic Party of India and the Jamat-e-Islami. He provocatively claimed that votes cast for either of these established political fronts would inevitably lead to a surge in incidents of what he termed 'Love Jihad'.
The BJP candidate further alleged that should the UDF or LDF assume power, the government would effectively be controlled by the JEI or SDPI. He painted a dire picture, stating that pro-Pakistan extremist organizations would actively promote 'Love Jihad' campaigns across the state.
Specific Claims About 'Love Jihad' and Anti-National Activities
Krishnadas elaborated on his warnings, making specific and alarming claims. "Hindu and Christian girls would be trapped in Love Jihad. These elements would then use them for anti-national activities," he alleged during his address. He framed an electoral victory for either the LDF or UDF as a direct threat to Kerala's security and social harmony, suggesting it would plunge the state into significant trouble.
These statements were part of his broader argument attempting to equate the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress. "Votes cast in favour of Congress or CPM would trigger Love Jihad. Such a dangerous situation is likely to emerge in Kerala. Voters should think whether there should be such a situation," he urged the crowd.
BJP State Leadership Distances Party from Candidate's Remarks
In a significant development, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar publicly stated that the party does not endorse the fears expressed by its candidate, P K Krishnadas. He clarified that the BJP's official concerns and promises are comprehensively outlined in its election manifesto, a document he emphasized took over four and a half months of careful preparation.
This distancing by the state leadership adds a layer of internal party discord to the controversy, as the Election Commission's action proceeds. The Commission has not only sought the report from the District Collector but has also obtained preliminary legal advice on the matter, indicating the seriousness with which it is treating the inflammatory speech.
Parallel Rhetoric from Union Minister in Palakkad
Meanwhile, in a separate campaign event, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made striking remarks at a rally in Palakkad in support of BJP candidate Sobha Surendran. He claimed that a Congress victory in the assembly polls would lead to celebrations in Pakistan with the support of Jamat-e-Islami, whereas a BJP win would result in celebrations in Indian farmlands.
Chouhan vigorously promoted the BJP's narrative, stating, "You will not find a leader like Modi and you will not get an MLA like Sobha. In the past 70 years, LDF and UDF destroyed Kerala. Every section of our society is affected. LDF and UDF are the same. People will vote for BJP to ensure development and a secure Kerala. NDA govt will be formed in Kerala."
The Election Commission's intervention underscores the heightened tensions and the strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct during this election season in Kerala. The district administration's report will be crucial in determining whether any violations occurred and what subsequent actions, if any, will be taken against the candidate for his remarks.
