Election Commission to Facilitate Transport for Elderly and Disabled Voters in West Bengal

The Election Commission of India is taking proactive steps to enhance voter accessibility in West Bengal by planning to arrange transport for electors aged 85 years and above, as well as those with a minimum of 40% disability. This initiative aims to ensure that these vulnerable groups can reach polling stations conveniently to cast their votes.

Provisional Arrangements and Home Voting Options

These transport arrangements will be provisional, offering flexibility for senior citizens and disabled voters. Importantly, individuals in these categories will also have the option to vote from home through postal ballots, providing an alternative for those who may face mobility challenges.

Manoj Agarwal, the Chief Electoral Officer of Bengal, elaborated on the plan, stating, "We will engage with app-cab aggregators to provide transport facilities for voters aged 85 and above, as well as disabled voters who wish to visit their polling booths. Simultaneously, the home voting facility via postal ballot will remain available."

Voter Statistics and Technological Support

According to Election Commission data, West Bengal has a significant number of voters who will benefit from this initiative. There are over 4 lakh Persons with Disabilities (PwD) voters and approximately 3.8 lakh voters above the age of 85. Among the elderly, an impressive 6,653 are centenarians, highlighting the need for tailored voting assistance.

To further support these voters, the Election Commission has introduced the Saksham module in the ECINET app. An EC official explained, "The Saksham module will provide comprehensive polling-related assistance, ensuring that senior and disabled voters have all the information and help they need to participate in the electoral process seamlessly."

This move underscores the Election Commission's commitment to inclusive democracy, ensuring that every eligible voter, regardless of age or physical ability, can exercise their right to vote without hindrance.
