ECI Transfers Four Tamil Nadu SPs Ahead of Assembly Polls, Reports High Voter Registration
In a significant move to bolster election preparedness, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Friday the transfer of superintendents of police (SPs) in four districts of Tamil Nadu. This action is part of the commission's rigorous measures to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process for the upcoming assembly elections scheduled for April 23.
Key Police Transfers Announced by ECI
The ECI has issued new postings for the SPs in the affected districts, aiming to enhance security and administrative efficiency during the polls. The transfers include:
- G Jawahar has been appointed as the SP of Kancheepuram district.
- K Prabakar has been posted as the SP of Perambalur district.
- E Sundaravathanam has been assigned as the SP of Thanjavur district.
- G S A Mayilvaganan has been designated as the SP of Tenkasi district.
In a strict directive, the ECI emphasized that the officers who have been transferred out must not be assigned to any election-related duties until the completion of the polling process. This measure is intended to prevent any potential conflicts of interest or biases, thereby upholding the integrity of the electoral system.
Surge in Voter Registration Applications
In a separate statement released by the Election Commission, it was revealed that a substantial number of voter registration applications have been received across Tamil Nadu. Specifically, 6,48,285 Form 6 applications were submitted after the publication of the final electoral roll, with the cutoff date being March 26. These applications span across all 234 constituencies in the state, indicating a robust engagement from the electorate ahead of the crucial assembly elections.
The high volume of voter registrations underscores the public's active participation in the democratic process, reflecting a keen interest in the upcoming polls. The ECI's efforts to facilitate voter enrollment and ensure accurate electoral rolls are pivotal in promoting inclusive and transparent elections.
As Tamil Nadu gears up for the assembly elections on April 23, these developments highlight the Election Commission's proactive steps in maintaining law and order through strategic police transfers and encouraging voter participation through efficient registration processes. The focus remains on conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections that reflect the will of the people.
