Erode Returning Officer Accepts TVK Candidate's Nomination After Resolving Objections
In a significant development in the Gobichettipalayam assembly constituency, returning officer and sub-collector S Sivanandham on Tuesday accepted the nomination of TVK candidate K A Sengottaiyan. This decision came after the nomination was initially kept pending during scrutiny due to objections raised by AIADMK representatives.
Objections Raised During Scrutiny
The objections centered on two key issues. First, AIADMK representatives argued that the notary attestation on Sengottaiyan's affidavit was invalid because the notary public, G P Dharmaraja, had an expired license. Second, they alleged that details of a residential property under construction were not fully disclosed in the assets declaration, raising concerns about transparency.
In response to these objections, the returning officer asked Sengottaiyan and his legal team to provide explanations and supporting documents. This step was crucial before a final decision could be made on whether to accept or reject the nomination, ensuring due process was followed in the electoral proceedings.
Resolution and Acceptance
The notary public, G P Dharmaraja, ultimately produced his term renewal letter to the returning officer, effectively resolving the primary objection regarding the expired license. Erode district election officer and collector S Kandasamy confirmed this development, stating that after receiving the renewal letter, the returning officer accepted the nomination.
Additionally, Sengottaiyan's legal team provided detailed explanations to address the other objections raised about the property disclosure. These clarifications helped satisfy the electoral authorities, leading to the formal acceptance of the nomination without further delay.
Implications for the Election
This acceptance marks a pivotal moment in the electoral process for the Gobichettipalayam constituency, allowing Sengottaiyan to proceed as a candidate in the upcoming assembly elections. The resolution underscores the importance of proper documentation and legal compliance in nomination procedures, highlighting how electoral disputes can be resolved through official channels and evidence-based decisions.
The incident also reflects the competitive nature of Tamil Nadu politics, where parties closely scrutinize nomination papers to ensure fairness and adherence to rules. With this hurdle cleared, the focus now shifts to the broader campaign dynamics in the region.
