Kerala Assembly Elections: CEO Declares Full Preparedness Ahead of Thursday Polling
Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U Kelkar announced on Tuesday that all preparations for the upcoming Kerala assembly elections have been fully completed. With voting scheduled for Thursday, Kelkar released comprehensive data detailing voter demographics and extensive polling arrangements across the state.
Voter Statistics and Candidate Details
A total of 2,71,42,952 voters are officially eligible to cast their ballots in this crucial electoral exercise. The electoral contest features a diverse field of 883 candidates vying for seats in the legislative assembly, setting the stage for a highly competitive democratic process.
Polling Booth Infrastructure and Special Arrangements
Authorities have established 30,495 polling booths throughout Kerala to accommodate the massive voter turnout. This includes 24 auxiliary booths specifically arranged in stations where voter registration exceeds 1,200 individuals. Among these polling stations, 2,040 have been identified as vulnerable and will receive enhanced security measures.
In a significant move toward inclusive electoral participation, 352 polling stations will be managed entirely by women personnel, while 37 booths will be operated by disabled persons. Special logistical arrangements have been implemented at booths anticipating higher voter turnout to ensure smooth and efficient voting procedures.
Advance Voting Progress and Personnel Participation
The electoral process has already seen substantial participation through advance voting mechanisms. Kelkar reported that 98% of voters who opted for the home voting facility have already cast their ballots, demonstrating strong engagement among those requiring special accommodations. Additionally, 95% of postal voting has been successfully completed.
Voting among essential service personnel is currently underway, with 40% of polling personnel having already exercised their franchise. This early participation by election officials sets a positive precedent for Thursday's main voting day.
Election Enforcement and Regulatory Measures
Authorities have maintained strict vigilance against electoral malpractices, having seized materials worth Rs 46.71 crore in connection with election-related violations. This substantial enforcement action underscores the commitment to maintaining electoral integrity.
Kelkar confirmed that Thursday, the polling day, will be observed as a paid holiday across Kerala, facilitating maximum voter participation. The Election Commission has implemented specific media restrictions, prohibiting exit polls from publication until 6:30 PM on April 29, while opinion polls have been banned from 6 PM until polling concludes.
Postal Ballot Clarifications and Support Systems
Addressing concerns regarding postal ballots not being received by voters, Kelkar provided crucial clarification. All postal ballots are currently with the returning officers, and comprehensive arrangements have been made for voters to cast their ballots at designated distribution centers on Wednesday.
A special control room has been established to address election-related issues and provide real-time assistance to voters and officials throughout the electoral process. This centralized support system aims to resolve any logistical challenges promptly and efficiently.
With these extensive preparations now complete, Kerala stands ready for a smooth, transparent, and participatory assembly election that will shape the state's political landscape for the coming term.
