Kerala Election: UDF Complains of Faulty Strong Room CCTV Cameras

UDF Candidates in Kerala File Formal Complaint Over Faulty Strong Room Surveillance

In a significant development concerning electoral security in Kerala, United Democratic Front (UDF) candidates from two key constituencies have lodged formal complaints with the Election Commission of India. The complaints center around alleged malfunctioning CCTV surveillance systems in the strong rooms where electronic voting machines and postal ballots are currently stored.

Security Concerns at Shree Krishna College Strong Rooms

The controversy revolves around the storage facilities at Shree Krishna College in Guruvayur, where EVMs and postal ballots from the recent elections are being securely held. According to detailed allegations presented by UDF representatives, the surveillance infrastructure at these critical locations has demonstrated repeated failures that compromise electoral integrity.

C C Sreekumar, the chief election agent for UDF candidate T N Prathapan in Manaloor constituency, provided specific documentation of surveillance failures. "During a routine inspection on Tuesday afternoon, we observed that one of the seven CCTV cameras installed at the rear section of the strong room remained completely non-functional between 3:01 PM and 3:39 PM," Sreekumar stated in his official complaint.

Systemic Issues and Official Response

Upon discovering the camera malfunction, election officials were immediately notified. However, subsequent investigation revealed more troubling details. "When we conducted a thorough examination of the situation, we discovered that none of the National Informatics Centre officials responsible for maintaining these systems were present at the site during the camera failure," Sreekumar elaborated.

The complaints highlight additional administrative shortcomings:

  • Inadequate serial numbering of surveillance cameras
  • Repeated instances of camera malfunction without prompt resolution
  • Insufficient technical oversight during critical periods

Formal Complaints and Demands for Action

IUML candidate C H Rasheed, the UDF representative for Guruvayur constituency, submitted a separate formal complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner. "The CCTV cameras installed at these strong rooms have demonstrated repeated functionality issues that we have brought to the attention of returning officers on multiple occasions," Rasheed asserted.

The candidate emphasized the critical importance of uninterrupted surveillance in electoral processes. "It is the fundamental responsibility of concerned officers to ensure proper maintenance and operation of all surveillance systems, particularly in sensitive areas directly related to electoral integrity. Non-functioning CCTV cameras create accountability gaps and could potentially enable irregularities," Rasheed warned in his complaint.

Immediate Remedial Measures Requested

Both candidates have demanded urgent corrective action from election authorities:

  1. Immediate repair or complete reinstallation of fully functional CCTV systems
  2. Issuance of strict directives ensuring uninterrupted surveillance until EVMs are transported for counting
  3. Enhanced monitoring protocols with proper technical oversight
  4. Regular inspection schedules with documented verification of system functionality

The complaints underscore growing concerns about electoral security mechanisms in Kerala, particularly regarding the storage and protection of voting materials between polling and counting phases. Election authorities are expected to respond to these allegations with appropriate investigation and corrective measures to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.
