Anganwadi Workers and SPCs Ensure Smooth Polling with Childcare and Voter Assistance in Kochi
Kochi Polls: Childcare and Voter Aid by Anganwadi Workers and Cadets

Kochi Polling Stations Transform into Child-Friendly Hubs with Anganwadi Support

In a heartwarming initiative to boost voter participation, anganwadi workers across Kochi set up dedicated child-friendly spaces at various polling booths during the recent elections. At the Govt LP School in Elamkunnapuzha, two-year-old Seenu enjoyed playful activities as her mother cast her vote, showcasing how such efforts helped parents, especially women, vote without worry.

Anganwadi Staff Step Up with Toys and Care

Officials, primarily anganwadi staff, were proactive in taking temporary custody of children as voters arrived. Anitha K G, on duty at St Mary's LP School in Murukkumpadam, quickly attended to children brought by voters. "Nearly half a dozen children came to the booth by late morning. Since we deal with children daily at anganwadis, we could handle them easily," she explained. The spaces were equipped with toys, puzzles, and even small beds to keep the young ones engaged, with only a few hesitant toddlers requiring extra attention.

Yamuna K S, another anganwadi worker, noted that older children often entertained themselves. "Since most polling booths are at schools, the younger kids gather on their own and play with swings and merry-go-rounds. We just keep a watch," she said, adding that toys and puzzles were also stocked for older kids to ensure everyone was occupied.

Student Police Cadets Enhance Voter Experience

In addition to childcare, Student Police Cadets (SPCs) were deployed at all polling stations to assist voters. These young cadets actively guided individuals, particularly the elderly, through the voting process. They demonstrated how electronic voting machines work using dummy units and encouraged voters to review candidate lists displayed outside booths, ensuring a smooth and informed voting experience.

Community Efforts and Minor Hiccups

To combat the hot weather, Kudumbashree workers served refreshing buttermilk at many polling booths, adding to the community-driven support. However, a mobile pouch system for phone safekeeping caused some confusion. Voters in several booths were seen forgetting to reclaim their phones after voting, highlighting a minor logistical issue amid the otherwise well-organized efforts.

Overall, these initiatives by anganwadi workers, SPCs, and community groups played a crucial role in facilitating maximum polling turnout in Kochi, making the electoral process more accessible and family-friendly.
