Tensions escalated in Kolkata’s Bhabanipur constituency during the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 after Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress candidate Mamata Banerjee made serious allegations against central forces deployed on polling duty.
Allegations of Atrocities and Detentions
Banerjee claimed that CRPF personnel and central observers carried out “atrocities” since the previous night. She alleged that several Trinamool Congress workers were detained and voters were harassed. The Chief Minister further stated that there was no presence of state police at polling booths and accused central forces of taking complete control of the election process.
Contempt of Democracy
Describing the situation as a “contempt of democracy,” Banerjee said she had never witnessed such circumstances in her long political career. She also claimed that women and children were not spared during the alleged actions.
Confidence in Victory
Despite the controversy, Banerjee expressed confidence in her party’s performance, asserting that the Trinamool Congress is set to win the elections. After casting her vote, she showed her inked finger, reaffirming participation in the democratic process.
Election Authorities Yet to Respond
Election authorities have not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations. All claims remain allegations at this stage and are subject to verification.
In related developments, West Bengal witnessed multiple incidents of violence and allegations of irregularities during the second phase of voting. Reports emerged of bomb scares, clashes, and EVM ink incidents across various constituencies. The Election Commission has deployed additional security forces, including NIA teams, to ensure peaceful polling.
