Mizoram Election Officials Finalize Preparations for Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls

In Aizawl, Mizoram, election officials have announced that preparations for the launch of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls are largely complete. According to officials from the state Chief Electoral Officer office, the Election Commission of India (ECI) anticipates the SIR to commence in April across 22 states and union territories, including Mizoram. This initiative aims to update and streamline voter lists ahead of upcoming elections.

Significant Changes Since the Last Revision in 2004

The officials highlighted a substantial transformation in Mizoram's electoral landscape compared to the previous SIR conducted in 2004. During that year, the state had only 795 polling stations. In contrast, the current setup includes 1,353 polling stations distributed across 40 assembly constituencies. This expansion reflects population growth and efforts to enhance voter accessibility.

Rationalization of Polling Stations and Database Updates

To ensure efficient voting processes, the state has implemented a rationalization of polling stations. The key measure caps the number of voters at each polling station to a maximum of 1,200. The proposal for this rationalization has received approval from the ECI and has been integrated into the staging database of ERONET, the Election Commission's network for electoral roll management. This update is crucial for maintaining accurate and manageable voter records.

Upcoming Workshop for Political Parties

In preparation for the SIR, a workshop for political parties is scheduled to be held on February 27. This session will provide stakeholders with essential information and guidelines regarding the revision process, fostering transparency and collaboration in the electoral system.

The completion of these preparations underscores Mizoram's readiness to participate in the nationwide SIR, ensuring that electoral rolls are up-to-date and reflective of current demographics. The efforts align with the ECI's broader goals of enhancing electoral integrity and voter participation across India.
