Puducherry Achieves Landmark Voter Participation in Assembly Elections
The Union territory of Puducherry witnessed an extraordinary display of democratic enthusiasm on Thursday, as citizens from all four regions—Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam—flocked to polling stations in massive numbers. By 5 pm, the territory had recorded a staggering 86% voter turnout, marking the highest participation rate in an assembly election since the inaugural poll in 1964. This figure is expected to rise further as election officials revise data after the final votes are cast, underscoring a robust civic engagement that surpassed previous years' benchmarks.
Historical Context and Polling Details
In comparison, Puducherry registered 82.2% polling in 2021, 84.03% in 2016, 85.52% in 2011, 85.46% in 2006, and 72.61% in 2001, highlighting a consistent trend of high voter involvement. Polling concluded peacefully at 6 pm, with officials ensuring that all voters who arrived before the deadline could exercise their rights by issuing tokens. The gates of polling stations were promptly closed at the scheduled time, maintaining order throughout the process.
Minor Incidents and Technical Issues
Despite the overall tranquility, a few isolated incidents occurred. In the Mannadipet constituency, police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse clashing cadres of the BJP and Congress near a booth at Thirukanur Government Higher Secondary School. The confrontation began when Congress supporters questioned the presence of numerous BJP activists canvassing for their candidate, leading to a verbal dispute that escalated into physical violence. Authorities quickly intervened to restore calm, with Home Minister A. Namassivayam seeking re-election from this constituency, contested by former MLA T. P. R. Selvame of Congress, along with candidates from PMK, NTK, and TVK.
Additionally, polling at a booth in the Karaikal (South) constituency was briefly disrupted for 10 minutes due to a technical malfunction in a VVPAT machine. Officials noticed smoke emanating from the unit, caused by an overheated battery, and acted swiftly by using a fire extinguisher to douse it. After replacing the faulty battery, polling resumed without further issues, demonstrating the efficiency of the election machinery.
Innovative and Traditional Elements in Voting
Voters were treated to a blend of innovation and tradition during the polls. At the model polling centre set up at VOC Government Higher Secondary School, a robot welcomed attendees, distributing roses and guiding them to queues, adding a modern touch to the electoral process. Meanwhile, All India NR Congress (AINRC) founder and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy continued his long-standing tradition by riding his Yamaha RX 100 motorcycle to a polling station in Thilaspet to cast his vote. Prior to voting, he performed a pooja at the Appa Paithiyasami temple, seeking blessings from his spiritual guru, and expressed confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would form the government for a second consecutive term.
Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, along with his wife and mother, also participated by casting their votes at a booth in the directorate of health and family welfare, highlighting the involvement of key figures in the democratic exercise.
Political Landscape and Electoral Dynamics
The main contest in these assembly elections is between the AINRC-led National Democratic Alliance and the Congress-led INDIA bloc. AINRC is contesting in 16 constituencies, with its allies—BJP in 10, and AIADMK and LJK in two each. On the other side, Congress is contesting in 16 constituencies, supported by DMK in 13 and VCK in 1. Puducherry comprises 30 assembly constituencies, distributed as 23 in Puducherry, five in Karaikal, and one each in Mahe and Yanam.
Reflecting on the 2021 assembly polls, AINRC secured 10 seats and BJP 6, while AIADMK drew a blank, allowing AINRC and BJP to form a coalition government with a simple majority of 16. The opposition saw DMK win 6 seats and Congress 2, with a record six independents elected, setting the stage for a highly competitive political environment in this election.
