Security has been significantly tightened outside EVM strong rooms at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata ahead of the West Bengal election counting scheduled for May 4. This decision follows escalating political tensions after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised serious allegations regarding the arrangements at the strong rooms.
Enhanced Security Measures
Authorities have deployed heavy police forces, erected barricades, and imposed Section 144 restrictions in the vicinity. These measures aim to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure a smooth counting process. Officials have confirmed that strict protocols are being followed, with round-the-clock surveillance to maintain security and transparency.
Background of Tensions
The security buildup comes after Mamata Banerjee accused election officials of denying entry to TMC representatives and alleged possible tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). In response, the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer denied the charges, stating that strong rooms are fully monitored. The TMC staged protests outside the strong room, sharing CCTV footage purportedly showing irregularities.
Meanwhile, the BJP has also raised suspicions, with party workers stopping a TMC vehicle in Bhabanipur, further escalating the political climate. Exit polls have projected a close contest, with some predicting a BJP win and others showing Mamata Banerjee potentially losing power.
As the counting day approaches, all eyes are on Kolkata, where the security apparatus remains on high alert to ensure a free and fair process.
