Tamil Nadu Implements Comprehensive Restrictions for Smooth Assembly Elections
As Tamil Nadu prepares for crucial assembly elections on April 23, the state government has declared a public holiday and implemented a series of sweeping restrictions aimed at ensuring orderly polling and maximizing voter participation across all 234 constituencies.
Three-Day Liquor Ban Across the State
The government has announced dry days spanning from April 21 to April 23, during which all bars and liquor outlets will remain completely shut. According to official notifications, establishments operating under FL2 to FL11 licenses (with the exception of FL6) must close their doors starting at 10 am on April 21 and remain closed until polling concludes on April 23.
An additional dry day has been scheduled for May 4, which coincides with the vote counting process. Any violations of these restrictions—including the sale, stocking, or transportation of alcoholic beverages—will face strict legal action under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act of 1937.
Educational Institutions Adjust Schedules
All government and private schools throughout Tamil Nadu will remain closed on April 23, as numerous school premises serve as designated polling booths and educational staff are deployed for critical election duties. This closure follows standard election-day protocols established to facilitate smooth voting operations.
Several colleges and universities have proactively adjusted their academic calendars around the polling date. Many institutions have granted additional leave periods before or after election day, specifically to enable students—particularly those studying away from their home constituencies—to travel and exercise their voting rights without academic hindrance.
Banking Services: Physical Branches Closed, Digital Operations Continue
Physical bank branches across Tamil Nadu will be closed on polling day, April 23. However, digital banking services will operate without interruption, ensuring that customers can seamlessly conduct financial transactions. Services such as UPI payments, online fund transfers, net banking, and loan-related operations will remain fully accessible.
ATMs will also remain functional throughout the state, allowing individuals to withdraw or deposit cash despite the temporary closure of brick-and-mortar bank locations.
Essential Services to Operate Normally
To minimize disruption to daily life during the voting process, essential services across Tamil Nadu will maintain normal operations on April 23. Healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services, will remain fully operational to address public health needs.
Pharmacies, ambulance networks, and other critical healthcare support systems will continue to function without interruption. Additionally, digital platforms and online financial services—such as UPI, net banking, and electronic payments—will remain unaffected, ensuring that residents can manage their financial needs seamlessly during the election period.
