Trichy Election Department Intensifies Monitoring After MCC Violations
In response to mounting complaints regarding violations of the election model code of conduct (MCC) in the Manachanallur constituency, the Trichy district election department has taken decisive action. The department has appointed an additional flying squad and a dedicated video surveillance team to rigorously monitor and prevent further infractions.
High Concentration of Sensitive Booths in Manachanallur
While the entire Trichy district, encompassing nine assembly constituencies, has 96 sensitive polling booths, the Manachanallur segment alone accounts for a staggering 51 of these booths. This represents approximately 53% of the total sensitive booths in the district, highlighting the area's critical focus for election authorities.
Background and Recent Incident
This heightened review follows a tragic incident where a 25-year-old woman died by suicide in Manachanallur. She had alleged abuse and assault by DMK workers after demanding a gift item, underscoring the tense electoral environment.
Official Statements and Complaint Statistics
District Collector and District Election Officer V Saravanan provided detailed insights into the situation. He confirmed that the election department has received 17 formal complaints regarding MCC violations specifically within the Manachanallur constituency. This constituency features a contest between DMK's incumbent MLA S Kathiravan and AIADMK's R V Bharathan.
The AIADMK camp has been particularly vocal, frequently raising complaints against the DMK candidate for alleged poll violations. In response to these incidents, authorities have registered 14 cases at police stations within the constituency limits.
Seizures and Enforcement Actions
Enforcement teams have been active in curbing malpractices. Flying and static surveillance squads have confiscated a total of 40,552 gift items, predominantly vessels. The estimated value of these seized products amounts to approximately 51.5 lakh rupees, indicating the scale of potential inducements.
Enhanced Security Measures
To ensure the fair and peaceful conduct of the election, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will be stationed in Manachanallur. Their responsibilities include:
- Residing in the area to monitor the ongoing situation.
- Conducting election flag marches in the vicinity of the 51 sensitive polling booths to deter unlawful activities.
Sensitive Booth Distribution Across Other Segments
While Manachanallur has the highest number, other assembly segments in Trichy district also have sensitive booths, though in smaller quantities:
- Thuraiyur (reserved), Lalgudi, and Srirangam: 3 sensitive booths each.
- Musiri: 5 sensitive booths.
- Thiruverumbur: 8 sensitive booths.
- Trichy East: 11 sensitive booths.
- Trichy West: 12 sensitive booths.
This distribution underscores the comprehensive efforts required across the district to maintain electoral integrity.
