Trichy Election Monitoring Teams Confiscate Over Rs 1.57 Crore in Cash

In a significant crackdown on electoral malpractices, election monitoring teams in Trichy district have seized more than Rs 1.57 crore in cash during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). This rigorous enforcement has been ongoing across nine assembly constituencies since March 15, as authorities intensify efforts to ensure free and fair elections.

Verification and Release of Seized Funds

Of the total amount confiscated, a substantial Rs 1.53 crore has been released back to the owners after thorough verification processes. However, Rs 8.4 lakh remains unclaimed, highlighting the challenges in tracing the origins of some cash movements. Officials noted that this unclaimed sum includes Rs 5.5 lakh specifically from the Lalgudi constituency, raising questions about its intended use.

Intensive Surveillance Operations

A total of 54 flying squad teams and static surveillance teams have been deployed across Trichy district. These teams are conducting extensive vehicle checks and inspections to curb the movement of unaccounted cash and prevent the distribution of money to voters. The operations aim to maintain the integrity of the electoral process by disrupting any attempts at voter inducement.

Constituency-Wise Seizure Breakdown

The seizures have varied significantly across constituencies, with Srirangam recording the highest confiscation at Rs 40 lakh. This was closely followed by Trichy West with Rs 27.4 lakh and Lalgudi with Rs 22.8 lakh. All seized cash has been promptly handed over to the respective returning officers for further action and documentation.

High-Value Cases and Income Tax Involvement

It is important to note that the reported figures do not include seizures of Rs 10 lakh or more, which are directly handed over to the Income Tax department for investigation. In one notable instance, Rs 50 lakh in unaccounted cash was seized from Malavanur near Lalgudi on April 2 and transferred to the department. Officials revealed that the family involved in this case is allegedly linked to a candidate contesting from the Lalgudi constituency, underscoring the potential political dimensions of these seizures.

Official Statements and Ongoing Vigilance

As of April 22, authorities confirmed that Rs 1.53 crore has been returned to owners who produced valid documents, demonstrating a balance between enforcement and due process. The remaining unclaimed funds continue to be held, with investigations ongoing. The election monitoring teams remain on high alert, with officials emphasizing their commitment to upholding the Model Code of Conduct and ensuring transparent elections in Trichy district.
