Residents across large parts of Gurgaon are set to face a significant water supply disruption lasting 36 hours, as authorities have announced a planned shutdown for critical maintenance work. The water cut is scheduled to begin at 11 am on January 7 and will continue until 11 pm on January 8.
Why the Shutdown is Necessary
Officials from the water supply department stated that the primary reason for this extended shutdown is to connect several newly installed bulk pipelines to the Sector 51 boosting station near Kanhai Chowk. These pipelines were recently replaced as a corrective step to address persistent leakages that have plagued the city's main water network, hampering its overall efficiency and leading to wastage.
In addition to the pipeline connections, a crucial Non-Return Valve (NRV) at the same boosting station will be replaced. This preventive measure is aimed at enhancing the system's reliability and preventing future disruptions that could be caused by issues like backflow or unstable water pressure. The shutdown period will also be utilized to carry out essential preventive maintenance at the source, the Chandu Budhera Water Treatment Plant (WTP).
Areas to be Affected by the Water Cut
The planned work will result in a complete halt of water supply from the Chandu Budhera plant, impacting numerous sectors and villages. Citizens in the following areas should prepare for low water pressure or a total absence of supply during the 36-hour window:
- Sector 37
- Sectors 42 through 74
- Village Badshahpur
- Village Khandsa
Preparing for the Disruption
Authorities have advised residents in the listed zones to store an adequate amount of water in advance to meet their essential needs during the shutdown period. The long duration of the cut underscores the scale of the infrastructure upgrade being undertaken. While the immediate inconvenience is acknowledged, officials emphasize that these steps are vital for a more robust and leak-free water supply system in the long run, which will benefit the entire city.
This proactive maintenance, targeting both the pipelines and the valve, is expected to reduce frequent localised disruptions and improve the pressure and consistency of water delivery to Gurgaon's households once the work is completed.
