Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Approves Record 820 Road Permissions to Accelerate PNG Infrastructure
In a decisive move to combat rising complaints of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortages, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday granted an unprecedented 820 road opening permissions in a single day. This landmark decision is designed to fast-track the installation of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) infrastructure across the city, ensuring households and businesses have reliable access to cleaner fuel alternatives.
Urgent Response to Global Supply Constraints
Civic officials emphasized that the action was taken urgently to mitigate dependence on LPG, which has faced significant supply disruptions in recent weeks due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. By prioritizing PNG connections, the AMC aims to provide uninterrupted fuel access for residential users as well as commercial establishments, including hotels, restaurants, and paying guest facilities.
"Considering the current global situation and LPG supply challenges, priority is being given to PNG connections," stated an AMC official, highlighting the critical nature of this initiative. PNG has been officially classified as an essential commodity under the Essential Commodities Act, underscoring its importance for continuous and reliable supply.
Strategic Distribution Across City Zones
According to detailed AMC data, the 820 permissions were strategically allocated across various zones to ensure comprehensive coverage. The breakdown includes 46 in the central zone, 93 in the east, 174 in the northwest, 130 in the north, 123 in the southwest, 99 in the south, and 155 in the west zone. These applications were submitted by three authorized city gas distributors: Adani Total Gas, Gujarat Gas, and Sabarmati Gas Company, all focused on expanding the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network.
Incentives and Collaborative Efforts
To facilitate this rapid expansion, the civic body has implemented special measures, including waiving road opening charges and permitting minimal digging in sensitive areas. While the executing agencies will cover the costs, the AMC will oversee road restoration work to maintain quality and uniformity across the city.
Additionally, the AMC has initiated proactive engagement with hotel and restaurant associations to promote a shift from LPG to PNG. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with associations advising their members to transition to PNG at the earliest opportunity, further supporting the city's move toward sustainable energy solutions.
This comprehensive effort not only addresses immediate fuel shortages but also positions Ahmedabad for a more resilient and environmentally friendly energy future, reducing reliance on volatile LPG supplies and enhancing urban infrastructure.
