Ahmedgarh Residents Demand Urgent Replacement of Damaged Water and Sewerage Pipes

Residents of Ahmedgarh are raising their voices to demand the immediate replacement of damaged water supply and sewerage pipes, a critical issue that has emerged as a major concern for the Municipal Council Ahmedgarh. This problem has gained significant attention ahead of the forthcoming civic body elections, the schedule for which is yet to be announced.

Political Pressure and Public Ire

Sitting councillors, regardless of their political affiliations, are facing intense criticism from residents in their respective wards. New political aspirants are actively instigating the public against the authorities and council members, capitalizing on the widespread discontent. The overflowing sewage and contaminated water have plagued almost all localities in the town, with low-lying areas suffering the most severely.

Root Causes of the Crisis

The primary factors contributing to this dire situation include the erosion of mild steel underground water pipes at private, domestic, and commercial premises. Additionally, the non-commissioning of a sewage treatment plant (STP) has exacerbated the problem. Residents are protesting and urging authorities to launch a comprehensive project to replace the damaged pipes, aiming to prevent water-borne diseases.

Deepak Sharma, a social activist and senior Congress leader, emphasized, "Instead of waiting for emergency calls, the authorities should conduct a survey of all sensitive localities and get the pipes replaced to avoid leakage and contamination of drinking water."

Official Response and Challenges

Executive officer Chander Parkash Wadhwa acknowledged that the erosion of underground pipes has led to the current crisis, where water supply is adversely affected by contamination with stagnant dirty water. In response, employees and workers in the water supply and sewerage section have been instructed to expedite the replacement of damaged pipes and connections.

However, the civic body faces significant challenges, including clearing choked sewers and managing overflowing water. An exceptional delay in commissioning the STP, due to the non-construction of the Maherna drain, has compounded these issues. Unlike normal times, where overflowing sewage is handled periodically by Sanitary Department workers, supervisory staff now must ensure that pipelines and manholes are cleared by specially constituted teams.

Specific Areas Affected

While the issue of overflowing sewage remains unresolved, the mixing of drinking water with dirty water has emerged as a more serious problem in some low-lying areas, such as Green Avenue. Following the reorganization of some wards and the approaching local body elections, elected councillors are facing increased criticism from aspiring leaders who allege that defective sewer layouts and a lackluster attitude from authorities have led to frequent sewage overflow and submerged areas.

Furthermore, the administration's failure to ban the use of plastics has been identified as a contributing factor to the blocking of sewers and pipelines, worsening the overall infrastructure crisis.
