The Amritsar Municipal Corporation has added six new sewer cleaning machines to its fleet ahead of the monsoon season. The move aims to improve drainage and prevent waterlogging in low-lying areas of the city. Officials stated that the machines will be deployed across various wards to ensure timely cleaning of sewer lines.
Enhanced Drainage Capacity
The new machines include jetting and suction equipment that can clear blockages more efficiently than older models. Each machine has a capacity to clean up to 500 meters of sewer line per day, significantly reducing the time required for maintenance. The corporation has also trained staff to operate the new machinery effectively.
Focus on Flood-Prone Areas
Areas that historically face waterlogging during heavy rains, such as Majitha Road, Batala Road, and parts of the walled city, will receive priority attention. The municipal corporation has identified 25 vulnerable points where these machines will be stationed during the monsoon.
Commissioner Harpreet Singh said, "These machines will help us respond faster to sewer blockages and minimize inconvenience to residents. We are also conducting pre-monsoon desilting of major drains to complement the new equipment."
Residents have welcomed the initiative, hoping it will reduce the annual flooding problems. However, some have called for regular maintenance and monitoring to ensure the machines remain operational throughout the season.
