In a significant move to enhance energy production, authorities in Andhra Pradesh have implemented measures to maximize power generation at the Sileru Complex hydroelectric plants. Following directives from grid authorities, the three major facilities in this complex are now operating at their full capacity to meet regional electricity demands.
Operational Status of Hydro Power Plants
Currently, all units at the Polluru, Sileru, and Machkund hydro power plants are fully functional and actively generating electricity. The only exception is the Donkarai plant, which is temporarily offline due to an ongoing overhaul process. This strategic operational push has resulted in a combined daily output of nearly 6 million units of electricity from these facilities.
Detailed Power Generation Breakdown
The Sileru Complex is contributing substantially to the state's power grid with specific outputs from each plant. At present, the Sileru plant is supplying 1.5 million units daily, while Polluru leads with 3.5 million units, and Machkund adds 1 million units. This coordinated effort ensures a steady and reliable power supply across the region.
Water Release for Agricultural Support
In addition to power generation, the hydro power plants are playing a crucial role in supporting agriculture. Approximately 8,000 cusecs of water is being released from the Polluru, Sileru, and Machkund plants specifically for irrigating the Rabi crop in the Godavari Delta. This timely water release is essential for the success of the current agricultural season.
Furthermore, Andhra Pradesh is drawing an additional 5,000 cusecs of water daily from the Balimela Reservoir as part of its allocated share. This combined water management strategy demonstrates the state's commitment to balancing energy needs with agricultural requirements.
Annual Generation Targets and Progress
According to AP Genco Sileru Hydro Power Plant authorities, the central power authority has set an ambitious target of 477 million units for the current financial year. So far, the plant has successfully generated 341 million units, showing strong progress toward this goal.
The remaining 136 million units are expected to be completed during the ongoing water release period to the Godavari Delta. This alignment of power generation with irrigation schedules represents an efficient use of water resources for dual purposes.
