Avadi Corporation Secures Historic 49 Crore Fund for Massive Road Revamp

In a landmark development for urban infrastructure, the Avadi Corporation has been allocated its largest-ever fund of 49 crore rupees to undertake a comprehensive re-laying of more than 400 roads. This significant initiative comes as a direct response to extensive road damage caused by ongoing underground sewage and drinking water supply projects across the region.

Detailed Breakdown of the Road Re-laying Project

Corporation Commissioner R Saranya provided a detailed overview of the ambitious plan. Out of the total 780 roads under the corporation's jurisdiction, 487 interior roads will be completely re-laid at an estimated cost of 41.8 crore rupees. Priority is being given to roads that serve critical community functions, particularly those leading to schools, bus stops, and hospitals to ensure safer access for residents.

"This represents the largest-ever road sanction in the history of our corporation," emphasized Commissioner Saranya. An additional allocation of 7.8 crore rupees has been designated for eight major arterial roads, including long-pending resident demands such as the Kamarajar Nagar road and Pachaiamman Koil road, which have suffered from neglect and deterioration over time.

Enhanced Quality Control Measures and Resident Concerns

To address past issues with road durability and wasteful expenditure, the corporation has implemented stringent new protocols. All contractors have been instructed that no road re-laying work may proceed without the physical presence of official inspectors on site. Furthermore, comprehensive inspection reports must be submitted and reviewed before any project advances.

"We are planning to conduct rigorous sample testing of all construction materials," Commissioner Saranya added, noting that previous limitations in technical staffing had compromised quality assurance. All completed roads will undergo thorough inspection before contractors receive payment, ensuring accountability and adherence to specifications.

However, residents have expressed concerns about historical mismanagement. J Jayakumar, General Secretary of the Bharathiyar Nagar Residents Welfare Association in Pattabiram, highlighted a persistent problem: "In many areas, underground utility work hadn't even begun when the corporation started re-laying roads. After completion, other departments would immediately cut through the new pavement for sewage and water connections, creating a cycle of waste and deterioration."

Strategic Planning to Prevent Future Road Damage

The corporation's new approach specifically aims to break this inefficient cycle. By coordinating with all relevant departments beforehand, officials hope to ensure there are no immediate road cuts following re-laying, thereby extending pavement lifespan and maximizing the return on this substantial public investment. This proactive planning represents a significant shift from previous reactive approaches that led to rapid road degradation and repeated taxpayer expenditure on the same infrastructure.

The comprehensive 49 crore road revamp project marks a critical step toward improving urban mobility and quality of life for Avadi residents while establishing new benchmarks for municipal infrastructure management in the Chennai metropolitan region.
