Barpeta Award Money Used for Hospital Water Supply

The Barpeta district administration has set a benchmark by utilising the prize money received as part of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration to construct a water supply system at the Barpeta Civil Hospital.

Award and Its Utilisation

The district administration was conferred the honour in April 2025 for achieving a milestone in implementing various central schemes. The award comprised a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh, a trophy, and a citation certificate. The administration decided to use the entire cash prize to construct a water supply system at the Barpeta Civil Hospital located in Kalgachia, ensuring safe drinking water for patients and staff.

Project Details

A district administration source revealed that the project includes a 60,000-litre reservoir and a filter bed covering 400 square metres. The hospital had been facing an acute shortage of drinking water for a long time. However, with this project, the hospital’s drinking water requirement will be met for the next 15 years.

“This initiative stands as an excellent example of how recognition received for administrative excellence could be transferred into a sustainable public asset that directly benefits society and strengthens public service delivery,” said Barpeta district commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha.

Impact and Significance

The new water supply system is expected to significantly improve the quality of healthcare services at the hospital by addressing the long-standing water scarcity issue. The project demonstrates a responsible and innovative use of award money, turning recognition into tangible public benefit.
