Kolkata: West Bengal's state municipal affairs minister, Agnimitra Paul, announced on Wednesday that the state government will implement advance monsoon preparedness measures, with a special emphasis on north Bengal. This decision comes in response to the severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in the region last year.
Minister's Statement
"As per the Chief Minister's instructions, I will soon visit north Bengal and hold meetings with MLAs and government officials ahead of the monsoon. We all know what happened in north Bengal last year, and we want to ensure such a situation does not recur. All precautionary arrangements will be taken in advance for both north Bengal and south Bengal. The Chief Minister has alerted us on this issue," Paul stated.
Background and Actions
The minister made these remarks after attending the Chief Minister's administrative review meeting for north Bengal. The meeting was conducted via virtual mode from Nagar Unnayan Bhawan in Salt Lake. The state government is prioritizing proactive steps to mitigate the impact of potential floods, focusing on drainage systems, embankments, and early warning systems.
Last year's floods in north Bengal caused widespread devastation, displacing thousands and damaging infrastructure. The government aims to prevent a repeat by ensuring all necessary precautions are in place before the monsoon season begins.
