Over the past two days, the Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) has undertaken pothole-filling work using bitumen and tar on the stretch of Bannerghatta Road between Vega City Mall Junction and Arekere Junction. This corridor has long been notorious for its damaged road surfaces and slow-moving traffic, causing frustration among motorists.
Temporary Repairs Bring Relief
The ongoing repairs have brought significant relief to commuters who use this busy south Bengaluru corridor. Authorities have focused on making the road safer and more navigable, especially as the city has welcomed the monsoon season. Officials have clarified that this exercise is a temporary measure aimed at improving road conditions during the rainy season.
Completion Timeline and Challenges
A senior BSCC official stated that the pothole-filling process is expected to be completed by Wednesday. However, the official noted that some pending work by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has prevented complete relaying of the road. Additionally, a fund crunch has been cited as a major hurdle for full road restoration. The amount currently available is insufficient to carry out comprehensive repairs, and the road's condition has worsened over time.
Metro Funds Allocated but Delayed
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) had earlier earmarked Rs 12.5 crore for repairs on Bannerghatta Road, particularly for damaged portions caused by Metro construction. BMRCL deposited this amount with BSCC and instructed them to undertake the work. However, the funds have not been fully utilized due to coordination issues and pending BWSSB work.
Public Criticism and Demand for Action
The damaged condition of Bannerghatta Road has sparked widespread criticism from commuters and residents. The corridor has been marked by numerous potholes and broken surfaces, drawing attention from road users over recent months. The public has been demanding a permanent solution rather than temporary fixes.
Comprehensive Redevelopment Plan in Progress
BSCC has transferred the proposed road development project to Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-Smile), which is now preparing a detailed project report (DPR). The proposal includes comprehensive redevelopment of the entire corridor, with white-topping suggested as a key component. White-topping involves laying a concrete layer over the existing asphalt, which is more durable and requires less maintenance.
Cost Estimates for Full Upgrade
Officials estimate that the reconstruction, drainage works, and white-topping along the six-lane stretch could cost between Rs 85 crore and Rs 100 crore. This estimate is part of the proposed comprehensive redevelopment plan, for which detailed project preparations are currently underway. The larger upgrade is expected to provide a long-term solution to the road's persistent problems.
