Bengaluru Expands Night-Time Garbage Collection to Tackle Overflowing Waste
Bengaluru may soon experience cleaner mornings as the city's civic body expands night-time garbage collection in a significant effort to address one of its most persistent urban challenges: overflowing waste and roadside dumping. This initiative by Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) aims to introduce additional garbage collection rounds in select wards under the Bengaluru south city corporation limits, with plans for a wider rollout if the pilot proves effective.
Addressing Long-Standing Complaints
For years, residents have voiced concerns about garbage piling up during the day due to delayed or missed pick-ups, leading to black spots becoming a common sight along several arterial and residential roads. Karee Gowda, CEO of BSWML, explained, "The night-time collection model is designed to plug gaps in the existing morning schedule and avoid garbage piling up." This move is expected to enhance hygiene and the overall appearance of neighbourhoods while helping to ease traffic disruptions caused by garbage trucks operating during peak morning hours, particularly in narrow residential streets and commercial areas.
Strengthening the Existing System
Officials have emphasized that the expanded schedule should not be interpreted as permission to dump garbage at any time of the day. Instead, residents and businesses will be informed about specific handover windows and designated collection points. Gowda clarified, "Night collection is meant to strengthen the existing system, not replace it. Residents must continue to segregate waste at source and hand it over only during designated timings. Without proper segregation, collection and processing become far more difficult." This approach underscores the importance of community cooperation in achieving effective waste management.
The pilot program represents a proactive step towards improving urban living conditions in Bengaluru, with potential benefits including reduced environmental pollution and enhanced public health. If successful, it could serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar waste management issues.
