Bengaluru Metro Enhances Yellow Line Service with Improved Train Frequency
Starting this Friday, commuters on Bengaluru's Namma Metro Yellow Line will experience a significant upgrade in service efficiency. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced that trains will now run at a frequency of 9 minutes during peak hours, replacing the previous 10-minute interval. This improvement is made possible by the induction of an eighth train into the fleet, which will operate between Bommasandra and RV Road stations.
Peak and Non-Peak Hour Frequency Upgrades
While the peak-hour frequency sees a one-minute enhancement, the non-peak hour service will witness a more substantial improvement. The interval between trains during off-peak times will be reduced from 18 minutes to 14 minutes, offering greater convenience for passengers traveling outside rush hours. This dual upgrade aims to streamline operations and reduce waiting times across the board.
Background on the Eighth Train and Public Demand
The eighth trainset was integrated into the BMRCL system a few days prior to this announcement but was initially utilized as a standby train to address emergency requirements. This decision sparked criticism from commuters and netizens, who urged the corporation to prioritize improving running frequency over maintaining standby capacity.
Former Infosys CFO TV Mohandas Pai notably described the practice of keeping a train on standby as cruel and called for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to intervene. With no additional trains expected next month, public pressure played a role in BMRCL's decision to deploy the train for active service.
Ongoing Metro Expansion and Infrastructure Inspections
As Bengaluru continues to await the completion of more Metro lines, BMRCL Managing Director J Ravishankar conducted an inspection of the upcoming Blue Line segment between Kasturinagar and Kodigehalli Cross. During the visit, he emphasized the need to accelerate viaduct completion to minimize traffic disruptions along the busy Outer Ring Road (ORR).
This focus on infrastructure development underscores BMRCL's commitment to expanding the city's Metro network while simultaneously optimizing existing services like the Yellow Line.
