Bengaluru Corporations Ramp Up Preparations for Census 2027
Bengaluru South and Central city corporations have significantly intensified their preparations for the upcoming Census 2027, with a strong emphasis on comprehensive staff training, structured supervision, and seamless coordination. The first phase of this critical national exercise is scheduled to run from April 16 to May 15, marking a crucial period for data collection and enumeration across the city.
Online Self-Enumeration and Initial Phase Details
The initial phase of the census, which includes house listing and housing census operations, officially commenced on April 1 and will continue through September. To facilitate citizen participation, households have the opportunity to submit their details online via self-enumeration between April 1 and April 15. According to a release from the Central corporation, this process can be completed in just 10 to 15 minutes using either a mobile phone or computer through the designated web portal.
Leadership and Coordination Efforts
Bengaluru Central commissioner Rajendra Cholan has underscored the necessity for flawless coordination across all departments involved in the census. He has directed officials to operate as a unified team to minimize errors and ensure the accuracy of data collection. Similarly, Bengaluru South commissioner and principal census officer KN Ramesh highlighted the scale of the operation, revealing that 4,678 enumerators and 798 supervisors have been appointed specifically for this exercise.
Training Initiatives and Supervision
To equip staff with the necessary skills, six training centers have been identified across various assembly constituencies within Bengaluru Central. Enumerators will undergo training sessions between April 6 and 8, with each center being overseen by teams led by revenue officers to guarantee effective supervision. In Bengaluru South, training will be conducted across 16 centers during the same period, with schedules already communicated to all personnel.
Both corporations have made attendance at these training sessions mandatory, issuing strict warnings against absenteeism. Potential consequences for staff who fail to attend include criminal cases, FIRs, suspension, and service breaks, reflecting the seriousness with which the authorities are approaching this preparatory phase.
Broader Preparatory Efforts Across Bengaluru
Last week, Bengaluru North City Corporation also held a preparatory meeting to ensure readiness for the census. Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar directed officials to focus on comprehensive preparation, emphasizing proper training, clear role definitions, and diligent execution of duties. This coordinated effort across all three major city corporations highlights Bengaluru's commitment to a smooth and efficient Census 2027 process.
The extensive preparations underscore the importance of accurate data collection for national planning and development, with Bengaluru setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
