Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner KN Ramesh conducted an inspection of flood-prone areas in the city on Friday, directing officials to expedite pending infrastructure works ahead of the monsoon season. The commissioner specifically instructed that all works near the waste weir of Madiwala Lake be completed before the onset of heavy rains.
Focus on Madiwala Lake
During the visit, Ramesh reviewed the progress of desilting and strengthening of stormwater drains in low-lying areas. He emphasized that the waste weir structure at Madiwala Lake is critical for regulating water flow and preventing flooding in surrounding localities. Officials were told to ensure no delays occur and to coordinate with the lake development authority for timely completion.
Pre-Monsoon Preparations
The inspection covered several neighborhoods that have historically faced waterlogging, including areas near Madiwala, HSR Layout, and BTM Layout. The commissioner also checked the functionality of existing drainage systems and directed the removal of encroachments that obstruct water flow. He urged residents to cooperate with civic authorities and report any blockages immediately.
With the southwest monsoon expected to arrive in early June, the corporation has intensified its pre-monsoon preparedness. Additional pumps and machinery have been stationed at vulnerable points, and emergency response teams are on standby. Ramesh warned that strict action would be taken against contractors failing to meet deadlines for drainage and lake works.
The commissioner also highlighted the importance of community awareness and requested local leaders to spread information about flood safety measures. The inspection concluded with a review of the corporation's control room operations, which will monitor rainfall and water levels round the clock during the monsoon.
