A day after intense thunderstorms and rain battered Bengaluru, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) reported widespread damage from fallen trees and branches. Officials stated that 157 trees and 228 branches had fallen as of Friday evening, disrupting traffic and damaging infrastructure across the city.
City-Wise Breakdown of Tree Falls
The Bengaluru West City Corporation recorded the highest number of tree falls at 59, followed closely by the Central City Corporation with 50 incidents. Other areas also witnessed significant damage, prompting immediate action from civic authorities.
GBA Directs Speedy Cleanup Operations
GBA chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao directed all city corporations to accelerate post-storm cleanup efforts. He instructed civic teams to ensure that smaller branches, leaves, and debris left behind after the forest department removes large tree trunks are cleared without delay. This measure aims to prevent inconvenience to commuters and residents.
Scientific Processing of Green Waste
Rao also directed officials to scientifically process the green waste generated during the cleanup. Corporations have been asked to shred fallen branches and leaves and utilize them for composting instead of dumping them as waste. This eco-friendly approach not only reduces landfill burden but also produces valuable compost for urban greenery.
The GBA's proactive measures underscore the importance of efficient disaster response and sustainable waste management in urban areas. Residents are advised to stay cautious and report any hazardous tree limbs or debris to local authorities.
