Multiple teachers across Bengaluru have confirmed their hassles to Deccan Herald, explaining that the month-long break due to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is likely to delay the academic calendar and jeopardise the prospects of students.
Teachers on SIR Duty Face Challenges
Teachers assigned to SIR duty have reported significant disruptions to regular teaching schedules. The SIR programme, intended to provide intensive revision for students, has instead created a situation where many government school children are left without adequate instruction. According to one teacher, the prolonged break has made it difficult to cover the syllabus on time.
Impact on Academic Calendar
The month-long SIR period has forced schools to pause regular classes, raising concerns among educators about completing the curriculum. A teacher from a government school in Bengaluru stated, "The break will certainly delay our academic calendar. We are worried that students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, will suffer the most."
Student Prospects at Risk
Parents and education activists have also voiced concerns. The delay is expected to affect students' preparation for upcoming examinations and competitive tests. With limited resources at home, many government school children rely heavily on classroom teaching. The disruption could widen the achievement gap.
Official Response and Way Forward
The Department of Public Instruction has yet to issue a formal statement addressing these concerns. Meanwhile, teachers are urging the government to reconsider the SIR schedule or provide compensatory measures to ensure that students do not fall behind. As of now, the situation remains unresolved, with the academic year hanging in balance.
