Delhi's Ambitious Bharat Vandana Park Set for Partial Opening in May

After multiple postponements, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced that sections of the sprawling Bharat Vandana Park will finally welcome visitors in May. This includes the highly anticipated Mini India zone, which promises to be a centerpiece attraction.

A 200-Acre Lotus-Shaped Recreational Marvel

Spanning an impressive 200 acres, the park has been meticulously designed in the distinctive shape of a lotus flower. Each of its ten petals represents a unique thematic and activity zone, creating a diverse recreational experience for all visitors.

The Mini India zone stands out as a major highlight, featuring detailed replicas of 37 significant monuments from every state and Union Territory across the nation. According to officials, this zone has been crafted to provide an immersive journey through India's rich architectural heritage and cultural tapestry.

Comprehensive Facilities and Infrastructure

The park's extensive offerings include:

  • A spacious congregation zone for gatherings and events
  • Vandana Sarovar, a picturesque boating waterbody for leisure activities
  • A dedicated meditation zone promoting wellness and reflection
  • A vibrant cultural zone celebrating artistic expressions
  • A family-friendly Fun Park featuring animatronics and entertainment
  • Multiple open-air theatres for live performances
  • Pushpkriti Vatika, a beautifully landscaped garden area
  • Scenic lake-view restaurants for dining experiences
  • Adventure sports facilities for thrill-seekers

To seamlessly connect these diverse zones, the development incorporates sky bridges and water canals that offer panoramic views throughout the park. The infrastructure includes an extensive 18-kilometer network of pedestrian pathways and a dedicated tram corridor for convenient transportation.

Delayed Infrastructure and Future Phases

One of the most ambitious elements, an 18-meter-high pylon bridge with a 1.2-kilometer skywalk supported by nine 45-meter pylons, remains incomplete due to pending approvals from airport authorities. This spectacular feature is scheduled for public access in the project's second phase.

The park will also feature a 'Wall of India' that will visually chronicle the nation's growth trajectory, highlighting significant achievements, inventions, discoveries, and global presence throughout history.

Project History and Challenges

The foundation stone for Bharat Vandana Park was laid in December 2019, with initial plans targeting a 2023 opening. However, the project has faced multiple deadline extensions. Officials attribute these delays primarily to the complex process of allotting kiosks and establishing comprehensive public facilities.

DDA Vice-Chairman N Saravana Kumar expressed confidence in the project's future impact, stating, "We anticipate this destination becoming one of Delhi's most iconic public spaces. As DDA continues developing Dwarka into a modern sub-city with world-class amenities, this park will emerge as a significant urban asset of national importance."

Sustainability and Environmental Focus

Envisioned as a vital green lung for the capital, Bharat Vandana Park aims to enhance air quality, ecological resilience, and overall quality of life while establishing new benchmarks in sustainable urban development. The project fully complies with GRIHA 3-star environmental norms and incorporates numerous eco-friendly practices:

  1. Preservation of existing waterbodies to support groundwater recharge
  2. Plantation of approximately 14,000 trees throughout the park
  3. Implementation of solar power generation systems
  4. Modern sewage and water treatment facilities
  5. Six underground storage tanks, each with 5,000 cubic meters capacity, for rainwater harvesting

Remarkably, waterbodies will cover a quarter of the park's total area, including two restored lakes. To maintain these extensive water features, DDA will supply 90,000 cubic meters of treated water from a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to initially fill Vandana Sarovar, followed by a daily supply of 1,000 cubic meters for ongoing maintenance.

Visitor Amenities and Operational Details

To accommodate expected high footfall, the park includes 28 food kiosks alongside premium dining options such as the Lake View restaurant and Deck restaurant. Parking infrastructure has been designed to accommodate approximately 2,500 vehicles.

While DDA serves as the nodal agency overseeing the project, the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) is responsible for its execution. Together, these elements position Bharat Vandana Park to become one of Delhi's most unique and aspirational public destinations, blending recreation, education, and environmental stewardship in an unprecedented urban development.
