Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Rolls Out Comprehensive Heatwave Relief Initiatives
In response to the escalating summer temperatures, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled a series of proactive measures aimed at providing relief to the city's residents, commuters, and essential frontline workers. The announcement, made on Tuesday, includes the establishment of rest sheds for sanitation staff and the installation of temporary drinking water kiosks across Bhubaneswar.
Dedicated Rest Sheds for Sanitation Workers
The BMC has inaugurated two attendance kiosks-cum-multipurpose rest sheds specifically designed for sanitation workers. This initiative was launched by Bhubaneswar Central MLA Ananta Narayan Jena, with BMC Mayor Sulochana Das in attendance. The sheds are intended to address the challenges faced by these workers, who often lack secure and sheltered spaces during their duties.
Officials explained that the rest sheds serve multiple purposes: they provide a designated point for attendance, facilitate coordination with supervisors, and offer short breaks while protecting workers from harsh weather conditions. Initially implemented on a pilot basis in two wards, the structures aim to enhance the welfare, comfort, and operational efficiency of sanitation personnel engaged in critical civic services.
Mayor Das emphasized that sanitation workers typically report to designated spots for daily attendance but have previously had no refuge from the intense heat. The new sheds are expected to significantly improve their working conditions by serving as agglomeration points with basic amenities during the summer months.
Expanded Water Access for the Public
Alongside the worker-focused initiatives, the BMC has committed to setting up 120 temporary drinking water kiosks at key public locations throughout the city. These kiosks are strategically placed to cater to every ward, ensuring that residents, commuters, and outdoor workers can stay hydrated amidst the soaring temperatures.
BMC Deputy Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo highlighted that the measures are particularly targeted at providing immediate relief to vulnerable groups, including street vendors, homeless individuals, and others who spend extended periods outdoors. In a compassionate addition, water pots will also be distributed in various areas to assist stray animals during the heatwave.
Enhanced Coordination and Emergency Response
To bolster its heatwave response, the BMC has activated a 24x7 control room dedicated to coordinating relief efforts and offering emergency assistance. In a collaborative step, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited has reactivated the toll-free number 1929, enabling citizens to report heat-related complaints and request help promptly.
The civic body noted that these actions come as temperatures continue to rise sharply, with roads in Bhubaneswar often appearing deserted after noon as people avoid the intense heat. By implementing these comprehensive measures, the BMC aims to mitigate the impacts of the scorching summer and ensure the well-being of all city dwellers.
