Bihar's state mines and geology minister, Pramod Kumar, has announced a comprehensive strategy to curb illegal sand mining and strengthen enforcement against sand mafias operating across the state. The minister stated that the department is preparing a proposal to equip field officials with body cameras during inspections related to illegal sand mining. Additionally, the department plans to engage an agency for drone-based recording of mining areas to improve surveillance and gather evidence during enforcement drives.
Addressing Attacks on Officials
Kumar explained that these measures are being considered in response to repeated attacks on officials and police personnel during anti-mining operations. He cited a recent incident in Sasaram where a tractor loaded with sand ran over a traffic policeman when the officer attempted to stop the vehicle after it entered a prohibited zone. Expressing concern, the minister noted that similar incidents have occurred in the past and emphasized the need for a concrete strategy to prevent such occurrences and ensure the safety of officials involved in raids and inspections.
Proposal for Special Force
The department is also considering the creation of a special force to accompany officials during raids. While assistance is typically sought from local police stations, Kumar pointed out that there are instances where officials conduct raids without prior information to prevent leaks that could alert illegal miners. A dedicated force would enhance security and operational effectiveness.
Weighing Bridges and Satellite Monitoring
Kumar further announced that weighing bridges would be installed near sand extraction points to enable immediate checking of vehicles after loading. This step aims to ensure proper measurement of sand and prevent overloading. Meanwhile, Director of Mines Manesh Kumar Meena revealed that the department has recently begun using satellite imagery to monitor mining activity. Action is being taken wherever illegal mining is detected through satellite-based inputs.
The proposed deployment of body cameras, drones, satellite imagery, and weighing bridges is expected to form part of a broader crackdown aimed at tightening monitoring and enforcement against illegal sand mining across Bihar.
