BMC Launches Online Water Services, Upgrades Reservoirs in Kolkata

Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Rolls Out Digital Water Services and Infrastructure Upgrades

In a significant move to modernize civic amenities, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched online services for water-related utilities in the Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur areas. Starting now, residents can conveniently hire water tankers and apply for ferrule cleaning, shifting, and new connections through the BMC portal, eliminating the need for physical visits to municipal offices.

Streamlining Access to Essential Water Services

Previously, residents had to personally contact civic authorities and submit written applications at BMC offices to avail services such as water tanker hiring or ferline management. Tulsi Sinha Roy, the BMC MMIC for water supply, emphasized that the new online system allows residents to access these services from the comfort of their homes. A dedicated link on the BMC website facilitates online bookings and payments, making the process more efficient and user-friendly.

For applications involving ferrule line changes or shifts, the process involves an initial online submission followed by a physical inspection by civic engineers. If the inspection validates the need for modification, a report is submitted to the MMIC for approval. Once approved, applicants receive an SMS notification to complete the payment online, ensuring a transparent and streamlined workflow.

Enhancing Water Supply Infrastructure

Alongside the digital initiatives, the BMC has inaugurated three revamped overhead water reservoirs—tank numbers 3, 5, and 10—in Salt Lake. These renovations, which included jacketing and other upgrades, have already begun benefiting nearly one lakh residents across 11 blocks and three housing estates, including Karunamoyee Housing. The improved infrastructure ensures a more reliable and enhanced filtered water supply to the community.

Roy further highlighted that all 15 overhead water reservoirs in Salt Lake are undergoing comprehensive upgradation, funded under the AMRUT scheme for the first time since the township's inception. This marks a historic investment in the area's water management systems, aimed at long-term sustainability and improved service delivery.

Impact on Daily Water Distribution

The overhead water tanks in Salt Lake play a crucial role in daily water distribution, supplying filtered water in four shifts to over 26,000 households and numerous commercial and office establishments. Each tank has a capacity of 12 lakh litres, underscoring the scale of the infrastructure supporting the township's water needs.

In addition to these upgrades, the BMC laid the foundation stone for a proposed drop pumping station at the Salt Lake FF block canal side. This station is designed to efficiently discharge wastewater, further contributing to the area's overall water management and sanitation efforts.

These initiatives reflect the BMC's commitment to leveraging technology and infrastructure improvements to enhance the quality of life for residents in Bidhannagar. By integrating online services with physical upgrades, the corporation aims to provide more accessible, reliable, and efficient water utilities, setting a benchmark for urban civic management in Kolkata.
