The Canacona Municipal Council has commenced pre-monsoon cleaning of drains and gutters across various wards, starting from the Chaudi area on Friday, as confirmed by council chief officer Laxmikant Desai.
Preventive Measures to Avoid Flooding
To prevent drains from clogging and subsequent flooding, Desai is personally supervising the cleanliness drive, which began in Canacona's main town of Chaudi. He emphasized that early cleaning of drains and gutters will help prevent rainwater from entering roads and residential areas. Additionally, the ongoing drive includes clearing garbage piles to stop waste from flowing into drains.
Community Involvement and Past Efforts
CMC supervisor Kanay Desai informed TOI that in previous years, local NGOs such as Goenkar actively participated in pre-monsoon cleaning drives. They often highlighted the need for the local administration to prioritize such work with a quick response.
Administrative Challenges Amidst Elections
With municipal elections expected soon, the Goa government has appointed administrators to various municipal councils, including Canacona. However, some residents have complained about the irregular attendance of the administrator in Canacona, raising concerns about governance.
