The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has set up a special cooling zone near the Jama Masjid metro station to provide relief to commuters from the intense heatwave gripping the national capital. The initiative aims to offer a respite from the soaring temperatures, which have crossed 45 degrees Celsius in several parts of Delhi.
Facilities at the Cooling Zone
The cooling zone is equipped with water mist fans, seating arrangements, and drinking water facilities. Commuters can take a break from the heat while waiting for their trains or after exiting the station. The zone is located at the entrance of the station and is accessible to all passengers.
Response from Commuters
Many commuters have appreciated the initiative, stating that it provides much-needed relief during the peak summer months. "The heat is unbearable, and this cooling zone is a blessing. I hope more such zones are set up at other stations," said a daily commuter.
DMRC's Summer Preparedness
DMRC has also taken other measures to combat the heat, including increasing the frequency of trains to reduce waiting time and ensuring that air conditioning in trains and stations is functioning optimally. The cooling zone near Jama Masjid is part of a pilot project that may be expanded to other stations based on commuter feedback.
Heatwave Advisory
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Delhi and surrounding areas, advising people to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours. The cooling zone is a timely initiative to help vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children, cope with the extreme weather conditions.
