Census 2027 Houselisting Phase Sees 12 Lakh Households Self-Enumerate
In a significant development for India's demographic data collection, approximately 12 lakh households across 11 states and Union territories have completed self-enumeration for the houselisting operations (HLO) phase of Census 2027. This marks a crucial step in the nation's first fully digital census, with more than half of these households utilizing the self-enumeration facility within the past 4-5 days alone.
Field Operations Commence in Eight States and UTs
With the conclusion of the 15-day self-enumeration window on Wednesday across multiple regions, census field operations are now set to begin on Thursday in eight states and Union territories. These areas include:
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands
- Goa
- Karnataka
- Odisha
- NDMC and cantonment areas of Delhi NCR
- Mizoram
- Sikkim
- Lakshadweep
These field operations, involving traditional door-to-door visits by enumerators, will continue for one month until May 15. Given that the 12 lakh self-enumerated households represent only a small percentage of the total population in these eight states and UTs, the enumerator visits become critically important for capturing comprehensive and accurate data on housing conditions and household amenities.
Self-Enumeration Windows Across Different States
The self-enumeration facility, being offered for the first time in Census 2027, continues to be available in various states with different deadlines:
- Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu: Self-enumeration window open until April 19
- Uttarakhand: Self-enumeration window open until April 24
- Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh: Self-enumeration commences on Monday
- Bihar: Self-enumeration begins on Friday
Digital Transformation of Census Operations
Census 2027 represents a landmark shift as India's first digital census, while maintaining the traditional door-to-door enumeration framework to ensure comprehensive coverage. According to the Census 2027 handle on social media platform X, the number of households that had self-enumerated until April 10 stood at 5.7 lakh. This indicates that nearly 6.3 lakh households enrolled between April 11 and 15, demonstrating accelerating adoption of the digital facility.
During field visits, enumerators will utilize a dedicated mobile application to collect data digitally, ensuring higher accuracy and faster processing compared to traditional paper-based methods. The home ministry spokesperson emphasized on Monday that the HLO phase of the census forms an essential foundation for evidence-based planning and formulation of welfare and development programs.
Important Instructions for Residents
Residents who have completed self-enumeration are advised to keep their self-enumeration ID (SE ID) readily available and share it with enumerators during field visits to complete the HLO process efficiently. All data collected under the Census Act, 1948, remains strictly confidential and is used exclusively for statistical purposes and development planning.
The digital transformation of Census 2027 represents a significant advancement in India's demographic data collection methodology, combining technological innovation with traditional enumeration approaches to create a more accurate and comprehensive population database.
